Basic Requirements for Doctoral Final Dissertation Defense PPT Presentation

According to the decision of the University Academic Degree Evaluation Committee, doctoral candidates must prepare and use a PPT presentation during their dissertation defense to fully present their thesis work. To standardize the creation and use of defense PPTs and to provide a clearer understanding of their content for both faculty and students, the basic requirements for the doctoral defense PPT presentation at our university are announced as follows.

1. Presentation Time.

The presentation based on the PPT should last approximately 40 minutes.

2. Content Requirements.

The doctoral defense PPT should essentially consist of two parts: Part One presents the thesis content; Part Two involves self-evaluation and future prospects.

(1) Thesis Content Presentation. In this section, the candidate should fully elaborate on the following:

A. The thesis topic selection process (briefly described).

B. The current state of development and trends in the research field, both domestically and internationally.

C. The research methods, technical approaches, and data sources employed.

D. The main content and research conclusions of each chapter.

(2) Self-Evaluation and Future Prospects. In this section, the candidate should provide a self-assessment of their research work, elaborate on the innovations and limitations of the study, explain the theoretical and practical value of the research findings, and outline prospects for future research.

3. Other Important Notes

Due to time constraints during the defense, the text in the PPT must be concise and precise, presenting complex content in an accessible manner. The combination of background images and text should be reasonable and conform to visual principles; the text should stand out clearly, while background images should preferably be subtle and not interfere with readability. Faster-paced slide transition effects are recommended. Keywords and references are not required to be listed in the PPT. During the oral presentation, the candidate should focus on key points, speak clearly and fluently, and carefully manage the presentation time.

A rigorous and standardized defense procedure is a fundamental prerequisite for ensuring the smooth progress of the dissertation defense and is essential for maintaining the high quality and standards of graduate education. In accordance with university requirements, the Degree Office will focus its random inspections on the proper use of PPTs and the adherence to standardized defense procedures.
