School of Public Administration Held A Symposium on Midterm Examination of Teaching for Graduates

In order to seriously carry out the work of midterm teaching examination, deeply understand the studying status of graduates of our school, listen to the opinions and suggestions with respect to such issues as training program designed by our school and teaching work and practically improve the quality of talents training and level of teaching management service, at 13:30 on November 12th, 2015, School of Public Administration organized and held a symposium on midterm examination of teaching for graduates. Professor Wang Shuwen, who takes charge of teaching work for graduates in School of Public Administration attended the symposium, and the directors in charge of teaching in each academic department and the representatives of every major attended the symposium. The symposium was presided by Tan Yu, the instructor of graduates and teaching secretary in School of Public Administration.

All the student representatives of every major spoke one after another. They shared their thoughts on campus life during the past half term and made some suggestions as for such issues as curriculum design, teaching methods, subject system framework and learning of majors. As to curriculum design, they hope that the school can averagely distribute major courses which are offered every semester so as to avoid the phenomenon that major courses are offered intensively or singly, and they also suggested that such courses emphasized specially as empirical research and quantitative analysis should be set as compulsory courses. As for teaching methods, currently the teaching styles of teachers in School of Public Administration are not the same, so student representatives suggested that a teaching method which is student-oriented should be widely promoted and the form of group discussion should be advocated to conduct teaching work in class and motivate the independent thinking of students. In terms of the study of majors, all of student representatives at present emphasized the importance of interacting and communicating with supervisors. Considering the fact that part of students cannot have a good grasp of professional knowledge since their major at the graduate level is not the same as that at the undergraduate level, it is suggested that this contact mechanism should be adopted to strengthen the communication and interaction between supervisors and their respective students, in the hope of gradually improving their academic and scientific research capacity.

Teachers at present from every department carefully heard the voices of students and gave answers to the problems proposed by the students one by one by combining their own teaching and working experience, and also offered their own proposals. For the students whose major at the graduate level is not the same as that at the undergraduate level, the teachers emphasized that they need to face the cost of that directly and strengthen their independent learning capabilities, which means that learn the knowledge they have not learned previously. In response to the problem that teaching styles of teachers are not the same, the teachers believed that specific teaching method should be adopted according to nature and contents of the courses and it is unrealistic to let all the teachers adopt the method focusing on student discussion but it is reasonable to appropriately increase the number of sections where the students can interact and communicate with their supervisors with respect to academic issues.

At last, Professor Wang Shuwen made concluding remarks and gave detailed answers to the problems raised by the students. She emphasized that the main work of the students in the period of graduate are studying and carrying out scientific research and the improvement of capacity for scientific research is the essential difference between the graduates and undergraduates. In the period of graduate the role of the supervisor is undoubted, thus the students must fully communicate with and understand the teachers when choosing supervisors and finally make a prudent choice. Professor Wang encouraged the students to strengthen the communication and cooperation with their supervisors and convert the research into academic achievements. In response to curriculum design, she expressed that she will inquire the students with School of Public Administration to understand the needs of the majority of students, thus revising curriculum scheme on the basis of fully understanding the opinions held by the students.

This symposium did set up a platform for the communication between the teachers and students, and made it convenient for the school to timely grasp and solve the problems existing in teaching management and knew the status of teaching work. This symposium played an active role in further improving the teaching work of School of Public Administration, and meanwhile also provided the school with first-hand materials to revise and improve training programs of majors, thus having a certain value of reference for the school to smoothly carry out relevant works in the future.
